Archna Sahni

Archna Sahni is the author of two collections of poems, First Fire (Calicut: Yeti, 2005) and Another Nirvana (Toronto: Mawenzi, 2018). She has been published widely in literary magazines, e-zines and an thologies, including South Asian Ensemble (Canada), Poetry Pacific (Canada – forthcoming), dialog (India), Muse India (India), Tuck Magazine (UK), Westerly (Australia), and the anthologies The Dance of the Peacock (India-Canada) and Voices Across the Ocean (India-Australia). She was awarded the inaugural Agha Shahid Ali Poetry Prize (India), and received Honorable Mention for the E.J. Pratt Medal and Prize in Poetry (University of Toronto).
Archna holds an M.Phil. (Master of Philosophy) and a Ph.D. in English Literature from Punjab University (India), and an M.Ed. in Adult Education and Community Development from OISE (Ontario Institute for Studies in Education), University of Toronto. Her M.Phil. thesis explores the political and religious connotations of blood in Bram Stoker’s Dracula, and her doctoral dissertation compares the story of Draupadi, the heroine of the Indian epic Mahabharata, with its modern fictional depictions.

Archna has taught both in Indian and Canadian colleges and universities – at the India campus of University of the Fraser Valley (based in Abbotsford, British Columbia), and George Brown College and Humber College in Toronto. She has presented and published papers on postcolonial literature, Tibetan poetry in English, education, women’s spirituality, and women in the Mahabharata.
